Wish I could get out. Havn't been out in awhile. Got some sweet new reels to try out. Wait I did go out for about an hour on Delray Beach and caught a blue runner on the 31st, but that don't count. :toast:

My experience the last month or so: Runners, palometas, a few ladyfish, and a bonefish -- definitely slooooooowwww. Some guys looking for blacktips near dusk, but haven't seen anyone get as much as a pickup so far.

Got a late start due to thunderstorms this morning; overcast with medium weed, but managed 2 nice-sized pomps on Boca beach this morning with frozen fleas. :-)

5/18/12 - Nice sized jack on Boca Beach

Post by gatorjwade »

Walked the boca beach Friday morning early before work looking for snook... didn't find any, but did find several small schools of mullet milling around happily. There was one small "spray" of small baitfish, I tossed my Super Spook Jr and after a couple twitches heard my drag singing... this 30+" jack was a good fight on my 1/4-3/4oz rod and Stradic 3000.... took out about 80% of my line and took about 10-15 mins to land.
Nice way to start the day!

Contemplating giving surf fishing a try next time pompano may be running -- i assume in October? Any suggestions on good beach fishing access with available parking in Boca? Also, where can you purchase sand flees locally? I see there is one company that sells them online....even ship live.....has anyone done this?

I never purchased sand fleas online.

I get most of my frozen fleas from T&R Tackle in Ft Lauderdale. They're natural color, and generally larger than I find other places.

7 Seas Bait & Tackle in Boca Raton usually has some fleas. They're pink blanched fleas, which actually are generally preferred by pompano fisherman a couple hours North of here.

You may find a couple pomps around anytime, but generally speaking the prime time here is Feb - April. (Also Nov thru March a bit North of here like Ft Pierce and north.)

Very exciting time here is during the Fall mullet run which is usually late Sept thru Oct. That's a good time to just walk the beach each morning at sunrise looking for action... some days not much.... other days "chaos" with hundreds of fish jumping out of the water!

Thanks for the info -- of course I decide it a good idea to take up pompano fishing just past season -- oh well. I am headed to Sanibel for a few days and may pick up some sand fleas to try over there (in addition to targeting snook with doa shrimp) -- not sure how prevelent fleas are in that area (in bait shops or in the sand). I'll look T&R up, thanks again.
