Juno Pier Question.. (from new jersey)
I intend to fish this Juno area in mid April... will fishing heat up by then or cool down.... what will i look to catch ? is fising from the pier a must? can i fish the surf right near the pier.... can I fish with a 9 ft sur rod and a spinning reel.... (plugging) what is the advantage to the pier.. and how do you land fish from pier... thanks !!!

Fishing the surf and Piers
Fishing Piers, Surf, Jettys its all good in and around that area.
As to what's better, who knows? I fish them all.
When fishing the Surf use common sense, I will go in to this a little further down.
So first check the water color, winds make a big difference too, you want a wind that is going to hold the bait against the shoreline NE, Soft East, SE for fishing to be better, but it does not always hold true.
Water color to be a lightish green with a little murkiness and a running Current, also a water color that I call the winter green which is a whiteish Green - this water color comes after a front with Ne winds of 20 to 25 and kicks it up for a day or two, anyway this is what I perfer.
Last year at that time in that area I was catching Pompano, Permit, Coakers, Whitting, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, Big Jacks and Sharks.
Matter of fact I believe one of the members of the forum caught a Smoker King you can say that again SMOKER KING, A really nice size fish that was in May or the end of April.
A 9ft Spinning will work, you may have to take your time getting it in and put 20lb test line or heavier. If you have heavy rods you may want to think about bringing them.
Throwing plugs is a good way to go, but do not forget live bait and Fresh dead on bottom rigs and Livelining.
As far as lures for the surf, Bomber solid and broken backs, Yousuris Crystal minnow Blue back, Black Back, - Rapala xrap is it, I love this one, works good on windy days.
Gotchas, Spoons, Diamond Jigs
You guys up north have weighted plugs that can be worked deep and on the surface, I have a few but don't know what they are called, they are blue with silver, we do not sell them here that I know of but they work well for Blues, and Big Jacks.
Or fish Bait
Sand fleas when the Pompano are around.
Livelining live baits out, anything you can catch.
Any Basic bait "Mullet, Live bait fish, Crabs, Live or Dead Shrimp fished on the bottom.
Stop at a local bait shop or stop by the pier and you should get some good input.
Landing fish from a pier, Pier Gaff or Pier Hoop Net someone there may net your fish.
Now fishing Beaches in Florida:
If it is Public you need to be where there are no Life guards.
You should not fish where there are people so use common sense.
Private beaches you should be below the High tide Mark due to Trespassing laws.
